Mindfulness means being aware of the here and now, consciously and without judgment. But how do we best cultivate this practice? The inner attitudes we adopt are crucial. The following seven basic attitudes form the basis of the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program and help calm the mind and body, focus, and see things more clearly – as Jon Kabat-Zinn describes it.

1. Beginner's Mind

We often find it difficult to approach new situations or people openly because our experiences and expectations guide our actions. The beginner's mind invites us to experience every situation with fresh curiosity and without prejudice—as if it were the first time.

2. Non-judging

Non-judgmental perception doesn't mean no longer making judgments, but rather becoming aware of when and how we judge—and not judging these judgments ourselves. This way, we learn to see situations in a more differentiated way and can act more appropriately and independently.

3. Acceptance

Acceptance doesn't mean resignation, but rather accepting reality as it is. This attitude creates inner distance, allowing us to decide more clearly how we want to deal with a situation.

4. Non-Striving

This attitude encourages us to let go of the constant "wanting of more" and simply be in the moment. Instead of focusing on the future, we learn to consciously experience the present moment – because only here and now can we truly change something.

5. Letting go

Letting be or letting go means recognizing entrenched thought patterns and automatic reactions and not following them. This gives us more freedom and openness to new experiences. A good example is breathing: In order to inhale, we must let go of the previous breath.

6. Patience

Patience means recognizing that everything takes time. When we're not constantly rushing, we're truly in the moment and experience more contentment and serenity.

7. Trust

Trust means listening to your own inner wisdom and body instead of being guided by the opinions of others. Those who trust themselves also develop more trust in other people and the world.

The sheer number of these postures may seem overwhelming at first. The good news: These basic postures are like a guide to developing mindfulness within yourself. You can learn and practice them.

My tip: Choose one of the seven postures and focus on it consciously for a week. This way, you'll notice how practicing one posture influences and strengthens the others.

Because every journey begins with a small step – as Charles Dickens said:

“Even a heavy door needs a small key.”

Don't put pressure on yourself to adopt all seven postures right away. Even the first step can have a huge impact.
