If you've been following my blog, you've probably come across Jorge Bucay. The author and psychotherapist writes stories that help us reflect and see our lives from new angles. In this post, I’ll share the first story from his book “Let Me Tell You a Story” – and what it reveals about optimism.
The Story of the Chained Elephant
As a child, I loved going to the circus. The highlight for me was always the elephant – so huge and powerful. Yet, offstage, he was tied to a tiny stake in the ground. A strong chain held one leg, but even as a child, I could tell: that elephant could easily break free. Why didn’t he?
I asked adults, but no answer made sense. Years later, I finally understood: As a baby, the elephant was tied to a similar stake. Back then, he wasn’t strong enough to escape. He tried again and again – and always failed. One day, he gave up.
Since then, he believed: “I can’t.” He never tried again. Not once. Even though, as an adult, he had all the power he needed.
The Deeper Message: Learned Helplessness
We often behave like that elephant. A failure in childhood or early life shapes our belief: “I’m not capable.”
Psychology calls this learned helplessness. It means that we stop trying, even when success might be possible – simply because we once learned that it wasn’t.
Why Optimism Is So Powerful
Optimism isn’t naive positivity. It’s about staying open – to new possibilities, new versions of yourself, and different outcomes.
To be optimistic means:
You don’t take the past as a permanent truth
You recognize that you're no longer who you were back then
You believe it's worth trying again – with all your heart
What You Can Take From This Story
Acceptance is only the first step. The elephant accepted – but never questioned again.
Challenge your “I can’t” beliefs. Are they still true?
Try again. With courage, with openness, with optimism.
Conclusion
Optimism is a mindset that lets you rediscover your own strength. The story of the elephant reminds us: Just because something didn’t work once doesn’t mean it never will. Free yourself from limiting beliefs – and find out what you're truly capable of.
